The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, a new regulation on batteries and waste batteries to promote a circular economy in the batteries sector by regulating all stages of the life cycle of batteries including production, reuse, and recycling. The Regulation includes labeling and information requirements on components for batteries, and outlines targets for recovery of materials from waste batteries. Published in the Official Journal of the European Union July 28, 2023, the Regulation became effective August 18, 2023, with Directive 2006/66/EC’s repeal beginning August 18, 2025.
