MIL-STD-461H Is Active - Can We Still Test to Revision G?

Question:

Our program documentation calls for MIL-STD-461G testing, but MIL-STD-461H has now been released. Must we change the test program to Revision H?

Answer:

Not automatically. The Defense Logistics Agency’s official ASSIST-QuickSearch record identifies MIL-STD-461H, dated April 17, 2026, as the active revision. MIL-STD-461G, dated December 11, 2015, remains available as a previous revision.

The controlling requirement, however, is normally the revision invoked by the contract, equipment specification, statement of work or approved test documentation. If the contract specifically requires MIL-STD-461G, the test laboratory should not quietly substitute Revision H. Doing so could change applicable requirements, procedures, limits, equipment needs or acceptance criteria without contractual authorization.

Conversely, if a new solicitation requires the “current” or “latest” revision, Revision H may apply. A document that merely states “MIL-STD-461” without identifying a revision creates avoidable ambiguity and should be resolved with the procuring activity before testing begins.

The same principle applies to tailoring. MIL-STD-461 is not a universal checklist in which every test applies to every item. The required tests and limits depend on the platform, installation, interfaces and procurement requirements. The official standard’s scope also states that it is intended primarily for equipment and subsystems—not entire platforms or individual modules inside an enclosure.

Changing revisions after a test plan is approved can create expensive consequences: obsolete procedures, missing test data, incorrect limits, additional hardware configurations or a requirement to repeat testing.

Practical takeaway:

Before issuing a quotation or starting qualification:

  1. Identify the contractually invoked revision.

  2. Confirm the applicable test matrix and platform limits.

  3. Compare the approved procedure against Revision H.

  4. Document any proposed revision change or tailoring.

  5. Obtain written procuring-activity approval before deviating.

Rhein Tech Laboratories can review your contractual requirements, develop the applicable test matrix and identify revision-related gaps before equipment enters the laboratory.
